In Support of the community she loves
Babs McLaren
In 1990, I took a librarian’s position at the Maple Ridge Public Library, and I moved here shortly after that. I was searching for the small-town feeling I had growing up in the BC interior. Here in Maple Ridge, I found my neighbourhood and my town; I knew I was here to stay. People were friendly, kind, and neighbourly. There were many different activities and events, there was a thriving arts community, and I was impressed with all the different volunteer organizations. Maple Ridge ticked all my boxes for a city where I could put down lifetime roots.
For years, I had donated to various large national charities. I felt no particular ties to these charities; I was just another donor receiving endless donation requests. I wanted to support local initiatives, but how to choose? It was a eureka moment for me when I found the Maple Ridge Community Foundation, an umbrella organization that gives grants to a wide range of local registered charities. This was a perfect fit for me.
I encourage people to support MRCF. If you want to be inspired, attend a Community Funding & Impact event where grants are presented and the power of giving is celebrated. You will meet the passionate and hardworking volunteers and hear how these grants make a positive impact in our community. You’ll also meet the amazing staff and dedicated volunteer directors of MRCF. I like that the foundation offers a range of funds so you can choose an area of personal interest for your donation. I also appreciate that MRCF has created a permanent endowment. The donations are invested, and the interest is used for the grants; thereby creating a lasting legacy that will continue to grow. I support the Community Chest and the general fund, which provides grants to a variety of non-profits. The Community Chest, a partnership with local Community Services, provides one-time immediate financial support to individuals or families in our community who have had a setback during difficult times. I heard of a young father who had just landed a good job but couldn’t afford the necessary work gear. MRCF was able to help. I know from personal experience that life can be challenging and scary; a little assistance at a crucial moment can make a huge difference. This is truly neighbours helping neighbours.
I am grateful for the generous help and kindness that I have received in my lifetime from both individuals and groups. While I was often not able to return the assistance directly, I believe in the circle of life; helping others completes the circle. We all gain by helping each other. We build stronger, happier, healthier communities where we can ensure a good quality of life for all.
